Descended is the world's first contemporary meta-classical album inspired by the life and work of Lafcadio Hearn, an overlooked 19th century writer and cultural preservationist. Hearn’s examinations of race, spiritual communities, and the beautiful strangeness of humankind remain resonant today, 150 years later. Maria Finkelmeier’s music blends past and present, braiding contemporary classical music with an other-worldy energy. Jean Laurenz’s dynamic trumpet playing and vocals create a narrative engine that reflects her Hearn’s philosophies on eternal memory, infinite wisdom, and supernatural interference.
